How to properly help protect your eyes from UV exposure
Less than half of parents enforce sunglasses use for their children, according to recent surveys by the Vision Council, a trade group, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Ophthalmologists recommending that all children under the age of 10 should wear sunglasses in strong sunshine, even babies.
To protect your children eyes, look for sunglasses that:
- are Comfortable and light : The more comfortable the sunglasses are, the greater the chance is that a baby will keep them on their face.
- provide virtually 100% UVA protection and conform to European safety standards - Look out for those marked as UV400. This means they block a minimum of 99.9% UVB and 99% UVA.
- are BPA-free as babies always to put the sunglasses into their mouth.

Toy or fashion-labelled sunglasses do not meet the requirements for sunglasses under the European safety standards and should not be used for sun protection.
Vision experts recommend sunglasses that block close to 100% of the entire UV spectrum, including UVA rays, which penetrate deep into the eye, and UVB rays, which are mostly absorbed by the cornea and lens.
